The WBA has a long and proud legacy of leadership in the Detroit legal community and beyond. And to this day,we remain committed to the principle that led to the WBA's creation, Equal Access and Equal Justice Under Law. Being a member of the WBA means belonging to an organization that has paved the way for African American and other lawyers of color since our predecessor association, the Harlan Law Club, was formed in 1919. Whether as agents for social change, jurists at the highest state and federal levels, elected officials, or private attorneys zealously advocating for their clients' rights, WBA members have played, and continue to play, critical roles in bettering our community and fostering diversity in our profession.
The Summer Clerkship Program, Judicial Externship Program, and Minority Bar Passage Program are but a few examples of how the Association continues to live up to its creed. I encourage you to not only join the WBA, but also to become active in its programs. You can also contribute to the WBA's goals by mentoring a law student, college student, or even a teen interested in the law as a profession. As president of the Wolverine Bar Association and Wolverine Bar Foundation for the 2011-2012 bar year, I look forward to working with you and continuing a tradition of service to our community dating back more than 90 years.
