
Eric M. Mathis is an attorney at the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, MI where he practices employment law litigation, real property litigation and guardianship law. He also advises DMC on state and federal healthcare law, including HIPAA, Stark, anti-kickback and other fraud and abuse provisions. Prior to joining the Detroit Medical Center, Mr. Mathis was an associate based in the Detroit office of Butzel Long, practicing primarily in the area of commercial litigation.
Mr. Mathis graduated from the University of Michigan (B.A., 1996) and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (J.D., 2002), where he wrote for The Pittsburgh Journal of Technology Law and Policy and served as Vice-President of the Black Law Students Association, coordinating the High School Moot Court Competition and the Street Law Clinic. Prior to joining Butzel Long, he managed several retail clothing stores.
Mr. Mathis was named the 2010 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by the Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. and a 2009 Michigan Super Lawyers' Rising Star. He serves on the Wolverine Bar Association Board of Directors and is a Past Chair of the Young Lawyers Division of the National Bar Association ("YLD"). As Chair of YLD, the Division was named the 2008-2009 Division Of The Year by the National Bar Association ("NBA") and he received the Presidential Award from NBA President Rodney G. Moore. He was named 2007 Barrister of the Year by the Barristers Board of Directors for the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. He is Co-Chair of the Diversity Committee of the American Bar Association ("ABA") Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law, Committee Chair of the Real Property Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section and Chair of Diversity Subcommittee for Real Estate Litigation Committee of the ABA Section of Litigation.
