The Michigan Civil Rights Commission (MCRC) is searching for an Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR.) The state legislature established MDCR in 1965 as the staff compliment to implement the policies of the MCRC, which was created by the 1963 Michigan Constitution. 

 

Responsibilities

The Executive Director is responsible for implementing the public policy set forth by the Civil Rights Commission. This includes providing executive leadership for the Department of Civil Rights and its one-hundred employees working in five offices throughout the state to enforce the civil rights statutes within the State of Michigan through complaint investigation, outreach efforts and educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department is also home to the Michigan Women’s Commission, the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan, the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission, the Arab Chaldean Council and the Division on Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

 

Michigan’s civil rights laws extend protections against unlawful discrimination to everyone living in or visiting Michigan in the following categories: religion, race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, and disability, in the areas of education, employment, housing, public accommodation and public service. Also included under the areas of protection are height, weight, genetic information and misdemeanor arrest record in employment, and familial status in housing.

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Legal Director, the Staff Attorney will both litigate cases and participate in non-litigation advocacy activities to advance civil liberties in Michigan. The Staff Attorney’s responsibilities include serving as lead and co-counsel on a variety of civil liberties cases; working in conjunction with National ACLU lawyers; and investigating, developing and litigating cases at the trial and appellate level in state and federal courts. The Staff Attorney will also have non-litigation advocacy responsibilities including: public speaking, media interviews, outreach, and writing op-eds, newsletter articles and reports. Overview
The Office of Disciplinary Counsel of The Supreme Court of Ohio is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Disciplinary Counsel. The office investigates and prosecutes grievances filed against attorneys, judges and magistrates which allege violations of ethics, charges of substance abuse and incapacity due to mental health. It also pursues charges regarding the Unauthorized Practice of Law.  The Office currently includes ten attorneys and has a total staff of 23 employees. It is expected that the starting date of this position will be Monday, July 1, 2013.

Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. The  Assistant Disciplinary Counsel investigates grievances, conducts legal research, writes motions and briefs, conducts depositions, interviews witnesses, drafts and files formal complaints; prosecutes cases before hearing panels and argues cases before The Supreme Court of Ohio.  Other duties may be required as assigned.
 
Qualifications and Requirements
Requires a juris doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school and must be licensed to practice law in Ohio; must have a minimum of five years active legal experience, with proven litigation experience; demonstrated legal writing ability; ability to accurately analyze legal issues; demonstrated trial skills, command of the Rules of Evidence; superior drafting and editing skills.  Must be familiar with the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct, the Code of Judicial Conduct, the Rules on the Unauthorized Practice of Law and the Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio. A high degree of confidentiality is required; must have experience with Microsoft Office products; and experience with case management systems. This position regularly requires travel around Ohio.  Requires a valid driver’s license. Overnight travel is also expected. No outside practice of law is permitted.
